This was our second collage project of the year.  In the first project I noticed a lot of empty spaces and a lack of detail for the majority of students.  So, for this project, I (strongly) suggested 🙂 that students start with a background before gluing their main images. Some students took this literally, looking for an image of scene from a magazine, like a field or a sunset.  When I realized this, I emphasized that they could create an abstract background, with various shapes and colors, etc. We also discussed harmony and unity as principles of art.  The goal was to create a collage that showed one of these principles.  The final collages came out great and many reflected the personality and interests of the student.
